Defra - Milk Road Map: 40% Renewable Energy Targets
The Department
for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced plans to cut
greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farms by 20-30 per cent. See
Defra's website here.
Food
Producers (including dairy) have now pledged to source 40% of energy from
renewables, improve water efficiency by up to 15% per litre and recycle
or recover 70% of non-natural waste on farms by 2020. Processors have committed
to doing their bit by aiming to source 20% of non-transport energy from renewables
or combined heat and power, and to a 30% reduction in water use. Food and
Farming Minister Jeff Rooker said: "Delivering on the targets contained
in the document will be a significant achievement."
Michael Jones, 4 Elements Managing Director, was also pleased with this announcement ‘the
whole country is behind the farming industry for the first time in many years,
the impressive media attention it is getting and wholeheartedly deserves, has
finally resulted in decent prices for dairy producers. This also presents
all dairy farmers with a big opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Relentlessly
rising energy costs are eating away at the profits that farmers and other producers
should now be enjoying. But for a moderate capital investment in our latest
renewable energy systems, a dairy farm could save significant amounts
of energy used to heat hot water for Dairy wash-through, and demonstrate progress in
hitting these new renewable energy targets. It makes sound business sense.’
